What is Ariens Snowblower Auger Cable?

The Ariens Snowblower Auger Cable is a critical component within the operation of Ariens brand snow blowers. Specifically, it connects the control mechanism to the auger, enabling the operator to control the auger’s direction or tension, depending on the snow blower’s model. This cable is part of the transmission system and is designed to withstand the rigors of harsh winter conditions, including cold temperatures and abrasive snow or ice.

How to replace a Ariens Snowblower Auger Cable

Disconnect the spark plug wire
Pull the spark plug wire straight up and off the plug.

Remove the belt cover
Using a socket and ratchet, remove the bolt that fastens the belt cover to the frame of the snow blower and lift off the belt cover.

Detach the cable from the control lever
Remove the top bolt from the cable guide pulley bracket on the left, rear side of the snow blower frame. Loosen the bottom bolt and pull the bracket away from the frame enough to relieve tension on the cable. Pull the Z-fitting out of the control lever.

Detach the cable from the cable guide pulley
Unfasten the bolt from the cable guide pulley. Remove the pulley to release the cable.

Release the cable from the 90-degree bracket
Unfasten the bolt that secures the 90-degree bracket to the frame. Remove the bolt from the pulley on the 90-degree bracket to release the cable.

Disconnect the cable
Unhook the cable from the belt idler pulley. Pull the cable free.

Install the new cable
Connect the Z-fitting of the new cable to control lever. Feed the new cable through the rear cable guide pulley and reinstall the bolt in the pulley.

Reinstall the 90-degree bracket
Position the 90-degree pulley bracket on the frame and reinstall the bolt that secures it.

Complete the installation
Reinstall the rear cable guide bracket and fasten the top bolt in the bracket. Position the rear bracket so the cable has a little slack in it.

Test the cable
Reinstall the belt cover and reconnect the spark plug wire. Following the instructions in your owner's manual, check and adjust the auger cable tension.

How To Adjust The Ariens Snowblower Auger Cable Control

Check Auger Control Operation

Follow these steps to check the auger control:

With the auger control lever disengaged, check the auger control cable tension. The auger control cable should have slack so it’s not pulling the idler pulley.

Start the snowblower and check to see if the auger moves with the auger control lever disengaged. With the auger lever disengaged, the auger shouldn’t move.

Engage the auger and let the augers run for about 10 seconds then disengage the auger. Cycle the auger on and off in a similar manner several times.

Check the auger to see whether it stops completely with the auger control lever disengaged.

See if the auger spins properly with the auger control engaged.

Shut off the snowblower and adjust the auger cable if necessary.

Adjust the auger cable

If the auger spins with the auger control lever disengaged, you’ll need to increase auger cable slack. If the auger doesn’t move with the auger control lever engaged, you’ll need to increase auger cable tension.

Follow these steps to adjust auger cable tension:

Loosen, but don’t remove, the upper hex bolt on the rear auger drive cable bracket.

Loosen, but don’t remove, the lower hex bolt on the rear auger drive cable bracket if necessary to the bracket slides up and down.

Move the bracket upward to provide more auger cable slack or downward to apply more tension on the auger cable.

Hold the bracket in place after adjusting its position and tighten the hex bolts.

Testing The Ariens Snowblower Auger Cable Drive System

Ground drive cable tension must be set correctly to properly move the friction wheel up and down to start and stop snowblower motion.

To test ground drive cable tension with the snowblower shut down, lift the auger housing up slightly and push the snowblower forward. The snowblower should roll freely because the spinning drive wheel isn’t touching the friction disc.

If the snowblower doesn’t roll freely with the drive lever disengaged, you’ll need to loosen the ground drive cable tension. That will release the drive wheel from the friction wheel so the snowblower doesn’t creep forward with the drive lever disengaged when the engine is running.

Next, engage the ground drive lever and see if the snowblower moves freely. The wheels should be locked up when the ground drive lever is engaged because the drive wheel should be up against the friction disc—Preventing the wheels from turning.

If the wheels turn freely with the ground drive lever engaged, then you’ll need to tighten the ground drive cable tension because the cable isn’t pulling the drive wheel up far enough to engage the friction wheel.

Tips And Tricks Of Ariens Snowblower Auger Cable

Auger For Ariens Compact And SNO-Tek Snowblowers

If possible, blow snow that's newly fallen, before it gets packed down or hardens.

If you keep the snowblower in a heated garage, move the snowblower outside for 5-10 minutes and let it adjust to the outdoor temperature. Then, start the engine and let it warm up for a few minutes. Letting it adjust to the outdoor temperature allows the engine start and adjust to the operating air temperature for smoother and steady running.

Before you start, spray a small amount of silicone spray inside the chute to prevent clogging. If the chute starts to clog, pause to allow the chute to clear. If the chute clogs completely, turn off your snow blower and then use the clean-out tool that came with your machine or a thin wooden stick to remove clog.

Start out slowly, increasing your speed only to the point where you feel the engine is working at peak efficiency. If the engine strains, slow down or blow a smaller swath of snow.

For deeper snow, push down on the handles to raise the front and make a first pass to remove the upper layer of snow, and the do a second pass to remove the rest.

Maintenance Tips of Ariens Snowblower Auger Cable

Check The Auger
Can’t expect to gather a lot of snow if you don’t have good augers onboard – Seems kinda obvious. For a single-stage unit, this means checking out your paddles. The rubber is designed to scrape directly on the ground, scoop the snow into the back of the housing, and up the shoot. Most paddles have wear indicator holes, when the paddle is worn down to the holes – It's time for a new one.

Snow Blower Lubrication
All-steel construction has been a staple of Ariens products since our first Sno-Thro came off the line in 1960. But with the benefit of durability and reliability of all steel comes the need to keep things lubricated. Metal on metal can cause issues, so it's best to stay in front of that.

Clean-up on Skid Row
Scraper bars are attached to the bottom of snow blower housing to help scrape up the last bit left behind. But, as their name indicates, their job is to literally scrape against the ground – making them somewhat sacrificial. Because of this, they need replacement every so often depending on frequency of use and how much it wears. Worn scraper blades won't clear snow as well as they did when they were new. If you start seeing more snow left behind your snow blower, it's a sign you'll need to adjust your scraper blade.

Shore up your Shear Pin Game
Shear pins, hold the auger to the auger shaft but are designed to break (shear pin – Get it?) if the auger hits something hard like a rock, a thick branch, or your son’s wagon (yup – That one happened).

Belts - Strapped up for maximum performance
Snow blower belts help transfer power from the engine to the actual sno-throwing bits. If you are into cool belt drive systems, our patented dual-belt-drive system on our higher end two-stage units is actually a really exciting feature – Read about it here.

Change The Oil
Engines need oil – I’m guessing this statement doesn’t shock you. And if they need oil, then that oil doesn’t last forever, it’s a fact of life. Oil changes on these units are very easy – If you can turn a handle (wrench handle) and pour with limited spilling, you can probably pull this one off.

Keeping Spark Plugs Sparky
The spark plug is the light that makes the magic happen – It literally is the light that makes the fuel in an internal combustion engine, well, combust. So yeah – Kind of a big deal you could say. Understandably, if your entire job is to light on fire multiple times a second, eventually you get old and need replacement. Good news here, if you thought oil changes were easy – Spark plug replacement is even easier. Still need to turn a wrench but no need to worry about spilling anything. Check your owner’s manual for the specifics but generally spark plugs need to be changed after a couple seasons or 100 hours of use – Whichever is first. Gently pull the wire off the top, unscrew the old one with a spark plug wrench, screw in the new one (gently) and replace the wire on top. When the wire “pops” on, its good!

FAQ

Q: What is a cable auger?

A: They typically feature a drum containing a cable that can be fed into the drain, with a handle or a crank to rotate the cable. Handheld augers are ideal for medium-level clogs that are not too far from the drain opening, such as those in kitchen sinks or bathroom drains.

Q: Why is my MTD auger not turning?

A: MTD Snowblower V-Belt
If the V-belt is worn out, misadjusted, or broken, the auger won't turn. Inspect the V-belt to determine if it is broken or worn out. If the belt is broken or worn out, replace it. If the belt is not broken or worn out, ensure that the belt is properly adjusted, and adjust the belt if necessary.

Q: Do you need a special extension cord for snow blower?

A: Use a 16-gauge light-duty cord for any outdoor appliance that uses 12 amps or fewer. This typically includes snow blowers, leaf blowers, circular saws, and air compressors. Outdoor vacuums should use three-prong, 12-gauge cords. Use a 14-gauge cord for decorative outdoor lights and holiday lights.

Q: What is the purpose of an auger?

A: Simply put, an auger is a spiral-shaped tool that is used to drill holes into the ground and other surfaces or materials. The spiraling metal shaft with a blade at the end of the device is known as a “flighting”. The flighting rotates to scrape, cut, or siphon out drilled materials.

Q: Why is my snowblower auger not turning under load?

A: A broken shear pin is the most common reason the snowblower auger won't turn properly so replace any broken shear pins. Worn or loose belts also prevent the snowblower auger from spinning. Check and adjust the belts and replace any broken or worn belts when you see the snowblower auger not turning.

Q: What engages the auger on a snowblower?

A: To engage the auger, a spring-loaded idler pulley and belt are used. When the bail arm is engaged, the idler pulley tightens the auger drive belt around the drive pulley causing the auger to rotate. The auger blades will then collect the snow and throw it out of the chute in one motion.

Q: What is an auger cable?

A: The snowblower auger drive cable connects the control lever to the engagement lever on the snowblower's auger drive system. If the auger won't engage, it's often because the auger drive cable is damaged, worn, or broken. Replace the auger drive cable with a manufacturer-approved snowblower part if it's defective.

Q: Why is my snowblower impeller and auger not turning?

A: If you inspect the connections for the impeller and augers and see that a shear pin is broken or missing, this is likely the cause of the issue. If all shear pins seem to be in place, but the augers still will not rotate, there may be an issue internal to the gearbox that is stopping the augers from rotating.

Q: Why is my snowblower auger turning slow?

A: It could be because the auger drive idler isn't applying enough tension to the auger drive belt (inside the machine) for the belt to grip the auger pulley and make the pulley turn fast enough. The other reason could be that the auger drive belt is worn, which can lead to the same result.

Q: Why does my snowblower not throw snow far?

A: Worn, stretched or damaged auger drive belt
A stretched or damaged auger drive belt won't spin the auger fast enough to throw snow off the pavement and out through the chute. Examine the auger drive belt. If the belt is okay but the cable isn't keeping the belt snug on the pulleys, adjust the auger drive cable.

Q: How tight should a snowblower auger belt be?

A: When It's engaged, it should be fairly tight. It may or may not have an adjustment to tighten the belt when needed. One thing to look at is if your belt is old, it may have worn the sides of it enough to actually drop the belt farther into the pulley which could cause slipping under snow loads.

Q: How often do you need to change spark plugs in a snowblower?

A: 100 hours
Check your owner's manual for the specifics but generally spark plugs need to be changed after a couple seasons or 100 hours of use – whichever is first. Gently pull the wire off the top, unscrew the old one with a spark plug wrench, screw in the new one (gently) and replace the wire on top.

Q: Why is the auger on my snowblower turning slow?

A: If one or both of the bearings have seized, the auger will have trouble turning. You should always lubricate the auger bearings as part of your regular snowblower maintenance to ensure the axle can turn easily, but you may need to replace the old bearings with new ones to fully solve the problem.

Q: How long does a snowblower auger belt last?

A: If you haven't changed the belts on your two-stage snow blower since the day you bought it, do it now. Factory belts typically last about five to seven years, depending on how hard you work your snow blower each year.

Q: How do I know if my snowblower needs new spark plugs?

A: The more worn or dirty spark plugs are, the greater the pull on the rewind and more effort is required to produce an adequate spark. If you haven't turned on your engine recently, your mower won't start and/or you have to tug repeatedly on the rewind to start the engine, a damaged spark plug may be the culprit.

Q: What are the main parts of a snow blower that are crucial for its operation?

A: Single-stage machines rely solely on a high-speed auger to collect snow and send it out the chute. Two-stage snow blowers add a fanlike impeller behind the auger to help throw snow out the chute. Three-stage snow blowers add an accelerator for even faster snow clearing.

Q: How often should you change the spark plug in a snowblower?

A: 100 hours
Check your owner's manual for the specifics but generally spark plugs need to be changed after a couple seasons or 100 hours of use – whichever is first. Gently pull the wire off the top, unscrew the old one with a spark plug wrench, screw in the new one (gently) and replace the wire on top.

Q: Why is my auger turning but not feeding pellets?

A: If it doesn't sense heat 15 minutes after the stove turns on, it will stop the auger from feeding pellets and it will stop the stove for safety reasons. Make sure your stove and venting is clean and the fire door and ash pan gaskets are good, creating a tight seal. Also, check to see if there are pellets in the hopper.
