A lawn mower spring is a critical component in the operation and functionality of a lawn mower. It can refer to various types of springs used in different parts of the lawn mower, each serving a specific purpose in the overall mechanism. Springs are typically made of spring steel or stainless steel, designed to provide the necessary force and flexibility required for their respective functions.

You will know the starter spring is broken on your lawn mower if the starter cord does not recoil back into the recoil assembly after you pull it. The spring puts tension on the starter pulley in order to wind the starter cord back after the engine starts. Starter springs can wear out and eventually break. Without a properly working starter spring, your lawn mower has no chance of starting.
Remove the screws from the top of the engine cover. Lift off the engine cover to gain access to the recoil assembly. Some lawn mowers may require you to remove the gas tank to better access the recoil assembly.
Unscrew the screws from the recoil assembly. Take off the recoil assembly and turn it over. Start by removing the pulley with the socket wrench or screwdriver, depending on the type of bolt holding it in place.
Remove the pulley and the broken starter spring beneath it. Reinstall the new starter spring onto the recoil assembly. Place the pulley over the starter spring and tighten the bolt to secure it.
Wind the pulley counterclockwise to put tension on the starter spring. Grab the starter cord with one hand and continue to hold the tensioned pulley securely with the other. Slowly let the cord rewind around the pulley. Pull the cord a few times to ensure it properly recoils.
Reinstall the recoil assembly onto the blower housing. Reattach the engine cover and tighten the screws.
What Steps Are For Lawn Mower Spring ?
Spring Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips
As soon as winter turns into spring and temperatures begin to rise, home and landowners everywhere rush to get outside and get their lawns looking good as new. However, before any landscaping tasks can take place, these individuals must first make sure their lawn care equipment is up to snuff. By considering the following mower maintenance tips, home and landowners can take on any spring lawn care task with confidence.
Air Filter Maintenance
Air filters are bound to get dirty at a slow rate over time, resulting in a loss of power and waste of fuel. If left for too long, a dirty air filter can make starting the mower more difficult and may even cause the engine to overheat, which can then cause permanent damage to the machine. To get ahead of these potential issues, equipment owners must regularly check the air filter on their lawn mower and take the necessary steps to keep it clean.
Fuel Filter Maintenance
As is the case with any piece of equipment, lawn mowers need fresh fuel to perform at a high level. Similar to air filters, fuel filters tend to get dirty at a slow rate and can go unnoticed by operators until the machine begins to lose power. With this in mind, one essential piece of spring mower maintenance involves changing the fuel filter once a year to avoid damaging the machine permanently.
Mower Deck Maintenance
Home and landowners looking to maintain a healthy lawn must also pay close attention to the mower deck on their machine. This not only involves making sure the mower deck is level, but also learning how and when to replace the drive belt and blade to achieve an even cut whenever the mower is used.
Removing And Attaching The Mower Deck
As previously mentioned, the mower deck is vital to ensuring an even cut every time. However, to enjoy the versatility of a lawn mower, home and landowners may need to occasionally remove the mower deck. With this in mind, operators should familiarize themselves with the process of removing and re-attaching the mower deck on their piece of equipment.
Oil And Lubrication Maintenance
Another important piece of the puzzle when it comes to spring lawn mower maintenance is performing regular oil changes and lubricating bearings. While they may seem simple, these tasks will be crucial to ensuring one’s machine runs smoothly for years to come.
Spark Plug Maintenance
Spark plugs that are dirty or defective can cause a number of problems for riding mowers, including making it difficult to start the machine, making engines run unevenly, or causing misfiring under load. However, these issues can be easily avoided by monitoring the appearance and/or performance of the spark plug and changing it before trouble ensues.
Versatility Of Lawn Mower Spring
01. Dethatching
Eliminate Excessive Thatch
Most lawns will naturally have a thin layer of thatch, but excessive thatch can cause a number of issues.
02. Mowing
A Healthy Start
The first cutting of the season is a critical one. Leaves, debris and other items left behind from the winter season can inhibit growth.
Additionally, the top layer of dead grass may hold potential fungal or mold problems. Removing the debris and top layer of grass is important for ensuring healthy lawn growth.
03. Fertilizing
Food For Thought
Even the best-looking lawns can benefit from a robust feeding and nutrient program that begins in the spring. Fertilizing not only can boost a lawn’s health, color, and thickness, but also its natural defenses against environmental stresses, weeds and pests. Depending on location, grass type, soil PH, and watering strategy, there is a fertilizer or soil amendment suited for any lawn.
04. Weed Treatment
Timing Is Everything
Maintaining a healthy property free of crabgrass, dandelions, and other troublesome weeds requires a head start, and spring is the ideal season to get out in front of weed infestations.
Most weeds begin germinating when soil temperatures approach 55°F or 12°C. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the early spring will help eliminate weed growth in lawns and beds.
05. Overseeding
Watch the Grass Grow
Just after treating a lawn with pre-emergent herbicides is the ideal time for overseeding to ensure the lawn is free of thin or bare spots.
Like weeds, grass seed germination is most active when the soil is neither frozen nor excessively hot, making spring and fall the ideal times to spread grass seed.
06. Utility
Springtime lawn work is busy and varied. With so many tasks, having a mower that can assist in many of these utility jobs is important.
The three main steps of lawn mower spring installation include: preparing tools and parts, installing springs, and testing functions.
Prepare tools and parts
Make sure all relevant parts are clean and neat and placed in a convenient location. This process requires carefulness and patience to ensure the correctness and safety of the installation.
Install the spring
According to the shape of the spring and the structure of the throttle switch, fix one end of the spring to the corresponding position of the throttle switch. Usually it involves snapping the hook or ring end of the spring into the notch or hole of the switch. Make sure that the other end of the spring is also correctly installed at the other corresponding point of the throttle switch.
Test function
After installation, test whether the throttle switch functions normally. That is, whether the spring can provide appropriate resistance and rebound effect to ensure the smooth operation of the throttle switch.

The process of installing a lawn mower spring mainly includes the following steps:
Preparation: First, make sure all relevant parts are clean and tidy, and place the parts in a convenient location for operation. This process requires carefulness and patience to ensure the correctness and safety of the installation.
Positioning the spring: According to the shape of the spring and the structure of the throttle switch, fix one end of the spring to the corresponding position of the throttle switch. This usually involves snapping the hook or ring end of the spring into the notch or hole of the switch.
Installing the spring: Make sure that the other end of the spring is also correctly installed at the other corresponding point of the throttle switch.
Testing the function: After the installation is completed, test whether the throttle switch functions normally, that is, whether the spring can provide appropriate resistance and rebound effect to ensure the smooth operation of the throttle switch.
Use tool assistance: For the installation of the spring between the lawn mower housing and the rear axle, a special hanging tool can be used to assist the operator to hang the spring. This tool includes a clamping assembly, a push rod and a hook. By pushing the push rod to rotate around the axis of the rear axle, the spring hooked on the hook can be stretched upward, and then the hook can be used to transfer the hooked spring to a special spring-hanging hook set on the rear axle, thereby easily assembling the spring.
A Step-by-Step Lawn Mower Spring Maintenance Checklist
Step 1: Pre-Season Inspection
Before you even think about firing up your lawn mower, conduct a thorough pre-season inspection. Check for any visible damage, loose bolts, or worn-out parts. Inspect the spark plug, air filter, and oil level, making note of any issues that need addressing. This initial examination sets the foundation for a trouble-free mowing season.
Step 2: Spark Plug and Air Filter Replacement
A fresh start begins with a new spark plug and a clean air filter. Replace the spark plug to ensure efficient combustion, and clean or replace the air filter to prevent dust and debris from entering the engine. This simple step significantly improves engine performance and longevity.
Step 3: Oil Change
Just like any other engine, your lawn mower requires clean and properly leveled oil for optimal functioning. Drain the old oil, replace the oil filter, and refill with the recommended oil type. Regular oil changes keep the engine running smoothly and extend its lifespan.
Step 4: Blade Inspection and Sharpening
A sharp blade is essential for a clean and healthy lawn cut. Inspect the mower blades for any signs of damage or dullness. If needed, sharpen the blades or replace them to ensure a precise cut, promoting overall lawn health.
Step 5: Check Belts and Cables
Examine the belts and cables for wear and tear. Replace any damaged or frayed belts, and ensure that cables are properly adjusted. Well-maintained belts and cables contribute to smooth operation and prevent unexpected breakdowns.
Step 6: Clean Undercarriage and Deck
Over time, grass clippings, debris, and moisture can accumulate under the mower deck, leading to rust and corrosion. Clean the undercarriage thoroughly, removing any residue that may impede performance. A clean deck ensures proper grass discharge and prevents clogs.
Step 7: Lubrication
Keep your mower running smoothly by lubricating moving parts such as wheel axles, bearings, and linkages. Apply the recommended lubricant to prevent friction and enhance the overall performance of your lawn mower.
